On May 5 2005 ('International Day of the Midwife') the South Australian Development Program for Midwives was offically launched.

This program (the Tasmanian Development Program for Rural and Remote Midwives (the Program)) was originally developed in June 2003 by the University Department of Rural Health and the Tasmanian School of Nursing as part of a national midwifery up-skilling program for midwives practising in rural and remote areas of Australia.

The South Australian Department of Health and Midwifery Advisory Committee Members have reviewed and adapted the program materials to ensure that it meets the needs of, and its relevance to, South Australia’s Midwives. The Program is not intended to replace any existing continuing education courses, but rather has a focus on providing midwives with the tools to assess and plan their own continuing education needs, based on a good understanding of the requirements of contemporary midwifery practice.

The Program content is in modular format, primarily to support distance-based learning and reflect a rural focus. Through their participation in the Program, midwives are also encouraged to develop or enhance their understanding and use of the Australian College of Midwives Inc ‘Competency Standards for Midwives’, and the skills and knowledge that underpin competent practice. This includes the use of evidence-based practice, quality improvement activities and legal and ethical principles.

Other benefits from utilising the Program are the development of searching skills and an appreciation of the many benefits of online learning and searching.
